STUDENTS’ PERCEPTION OF THE USE OF STORY TELLING TECHNIQUE TO IMPROVE PRONUNCIATION SKILLS
Syahria, Nukmatus
PGRI Adi Buana University
The complexities of skills in the Pronunciation created many hindrances for the students in mastering the Pronunciation Practice subject. Most of the first semester students of Adi Buana University were failed during the mid test since they have very little background knowledge of the Pronunciation skills and they tend to get bored during the teaching and learning activities. The writer tried to apply the story telling technique in the middle of the semester to foster the pronunciation skills to the first semester undergraduate students of English Department as well as to arouse the students’ motivation in learning pronunciation. The result showed a significant progress on the final test score of the students and it also gave a good impact toward the students’ motivation in learning Pronunciation.

Reading strategies are crucial in education. This research focused on Timorese language students’ levels of reading strategies. It attempted to answer two research questions; (1) What are the levels of Timorese language students’ metacognitive awareness of reading strategies? and (2) How do Timorese language students apply the reading strategies in their reading experiences? A mixed-method design was adopted. Mokhtari & Sheorey’s (2002) Survey of Reading Strategies (SoRS) was used to collect quantitative data. The findings revealed two high levels; global reading strategies, with a mean value M=3.86, SD=1.1837, and support reading strategies, with a mean value of M=3.79 SD=1.2120. Problem-solving strategies were medium-level, with a mean value M=3.61, SD=1.1718. Highlighting keynotes, using google, discussing, controlling speed were revealed in the qualitative data as adopted reading strategies. Language teachers could use this research to improve language students’ reading strategies, and future researchers should do extensive research to provide more findings.
Keywords: awarenes, metacognitive, reading strategies.

Errors Made by the Second Semester Students of the English Department at Widya Mandala Catholic University Surabaya in Learning English Tenses as Reflected in Their Narrative Writing
Hartono, Ervina
Widya Mandala Catholic University
People realize that writing cannot be separated from their lives such as in the school and college, they have to make essays or journals for their subjects and in the office, they have to make business letters or reports for their job. Realizing that writing is very important, the writer did an error analysis on the students’ tenses in their narrative writing. The reasons why the writer conducted this research are to find out to what extend the second semester students of the English Department at WMCUS acquire the English tenses as reflected in their narrative writing, to find out the possible sources of errors that the student make in constructing English tenses in their narrative composition, and to suggest the possible solutions of the problems.
The subjects are the second semester students of Widya Mandala Catholic University Surabaya. The writer took two classes: class B and C. The writer took the two class in the middle of the six classes. The writer collected the students’ test papers which were the data before they are marked by the lecturers. Then, the writer analyzed the data by recognizing and identifying errors, counting the frequency of error occurrences, classifying the identified errors according to the source of errors, interpreting the findings, making conclusion and suggestions.
In analyzing the data, the writer did not use one of the Larry Selinker’s sources of error―Transfer of Training is not included because the source can be seen in Speaking clearly. The writer did not use the Transfer of Training to analyze the sources of errors in the data analysis. The results of the analysis are as follows: The sources of errors that contribute are Language Transfer (7% errors), Strategies of Second Language Learning (54,3% errors), Strategies of Second Language Communication (1,6% errors), and Overgeneralization of Target Language Material (37,1% errors). The prominent errors are Strategies of Second Language Learning (54,3% errors) and Overgeneralization of Target Language Material (37,1% errors). From the analysis, the writer concludes that certain students have not mastered two tenses: Simple Present Tense (38% errors) and Simple Past Tense (52% errors). The occurrence of students’ errors in the Simple Present Tense and the Simple Past Tense might be caused by the students’ confusion because the two tenses are often used in the narrative writing and the regular use of the two tenses and there was a possibility of the students’ carelessness. The possible solutions that the writer provided are categorized in two types of errors which are form and function. To overcome the form error, the writer

suggested drill and exercises and to overcome function error, the writer suggested the Communicative Approach.

Kolokasi di Bidang Penerjemahan
Astuti, Purwani Indri

TEACHER QUESTIONS IN JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL CLASSROOM
Bapan, Delvidus Nong
Cita Hati Christian School Surabaya
This study described the types of questions, examined the frequency of the questions types, found out the reasons teacher addresses the high frequency questions as well as what the learners responded to those questions in seventh graders of Cita Hati Junior High School. The results demonstrated that both display and referential questions were asked by the teacher in his teaching. The teacher’s reasons of asking referential questions were to dig more information and build interaction with the students. Both referential and display questions could produce students’ long verbal form responses. Furthermore, the students could also produce not only longer but also more complex responses toward referential questions. By asking referential questions, his teaching was more alive since his students were in high English proficiency. Above all, it shows that the teacher question types were not only used to acquire the form of students’ responses but also to achieve the teacher’s purposes of asking questions.

The Communicative Language Teaching Approach: Theory and Practice
Suemith, Merlissa Elpedes
This paper is an exposition of the Communicative Language
Teaching (CLT) Approach. After establishing the need for a more
effective teaching strategy by presenting the limitations of earlier
methods, the emergence of language learning theories is discussed and
how they, in turn, paved the way for the development of CLT. CLT is
tackled as a more comprehensive approach because it takes into account
learner’s communicative needs. There is less emphasis on grammar
precision but more on fluency. The learner is the focus, while the teacher
is a facilitator. From this, some pedagogical implications are given,
although not exhausted, as a way of bringing the approach into the
classroom setting

Writing, one of the language skills, is considered difficult for some students, especially EFL students. The present research, a phenomenological study, aims to find out the students’ difficulties, the factors affecting their difficulties, and the strategies for overcoming their difficulties in writing expository essays. The participants were three students, taken by using purposive sampling, in a private university in Surabaya. The instruments used in this research were observational fieldnotes, rubrics, Focus Group Discussion guidelines, and Interview protocols. The research findings show that the research participants had difficulties in the five components of writing, namely content, vocabulary, language use, mechanics, and organization. The common difficulties the participants faced were related to word choice, finding and developing ideas, verb tense, run-on sentences, spelling, punctuation, and writing the thesis statements and topic sentences. There were internal and external factors that affected their difficulties, but most of the factors were internal. The most common factors were that the participants did the assignments at the last minute or in a hurry, felt sleepy and lazy, and were afraid of plagiarism. Some ways of overcoming their difficulties were finding more ideas and materials on the Internet, discussing the topic and content with their friends and lecturers, writing the ideas in Indonesian before translating them into English, using common vocabulary, learning new vocabulary, finding the opposites and synonyms of some words, doing paraphrase, using Grammar-checking tools, learning from the previous mistakes, paying more attention to the essay structure, making an outline, learning more basic English grammar, revising the mistakes based on the lecturer’s feedback, and listening to music when writing the essays.

Pengembangan Media Pembelajaran Mandiri BerbantuanKomputer untuk Meningkatkan Pemahaman Konsep Kalkulus II
Arcana, I. Nyoman
mempermudah pemahaman konsep dasar kalkulus. Pengembangan
pembelajaran ini menggunakan metode/model prosedural, yaitu model
yang bersifat deskriptif. Presedur pengembangan meliputi: studi
eksplorasi, pengembangan bentuk awal produk, validasi (validasi ahli, uji
lapangan), revisi program berdasarkan hasil validasi, dan pengumpulan
serta analisis data. Hasil pengembangan adalah CD pembelajaran yang
diberi judul REMEDI KONSEP KALKULUS

Critical thinking is always assumed to deal with critical reading and critical writing that also involve scientific materials. Critical thinking is also judged as the thinking skill limited to smart students only, since there are complicated problems involved, namely linguistic, psychological and cognitive problems. For students with such kinds of condition and situation, they need different materials and strategies adjusted to their characteristics to develop their critical thinking skills. This research showed that low achieving students of English as a foreign language (EFL) successfully improved their critical thinking skills after having activities of the poem interpretation and analysis activities in their Reading classes. This research also proved that when they align in pursuit of critical thinking by reading poems completed with the assignments. These lead the students to engage themselves not only in joyful learning activities of reading but also in training their thinking skills. They could perform interpreting and analysing poems with reasonable points of view. By having descriptive qualitative research for several months, there were crucial factors in optimizing the best performance of the low achieving students of EFL in thinking critically, namely well-designed lesson plans, peer-learning activities, and good teacher feedbacks.

One of the biggest obstacles facing teachers of young learners is classroom management. Classroom management is needed to control students’ behavior, movement and interaction during a lesson in class. A good teacher is someone who is kind, patience, and loves the students. Creating a caring classroom environment for young learners is not an easy task for any teacher. Young learners are full of energy and each child is totally different. Maintaining discipline and setting up activities are needed in creating a good atmosphere for the children. Classroom environment for young learners should be fun and also create a safe learning environment where students feel comfortable. This paper briefly explains about classroom management at Merlion School (MS) Surabaya, Indonesia. Here, the teacher uses some classroom management strategies to facilitate a conducive environment in class such as: setting up the classroom rules, the proper seating arrangement, giving rewards, creating students’ birthday cards, providing book corner, assigning weekly leaders, and providing the cubby holes for students.

FORESIGHT EDUCATION: REDEFINING LEADERSHIP FOR A BETTER FUTURE INDONESIA
Nugroho, Gregorius Kukuh
Intitute Pastoral Indonesia Malang
Problems in education are no longer simple. The challenges in the education are increasing, complex, demanding, detailed, and need to be addressed properly. Communication and technology practically change our social life. The educational system has shift from traditional learning to experiential and virtual learning (for example: online learning, google/classroom, tedex.com). It is useless to always complain about the increase funding, as an excuse to make better educational organization. Recent academic report showed, in Indonesian educational systems, there are stagnation and many resistants to transform (Prasetyawan, 2017). This is the right time to improve and to seize the opportunities to move forward. It is a time to redefine the educational system in Indonesia. It is about time to bring: real empowerment, innovations, long-term and sustainable problem solving, which in turn will create a better world. This article proposes ‘foresight’ as a method to bring a better education.

THE EFFECT OF TOTAL PHYSICAL RESPONSE STORY ON THE VOCABULARY MASTERY OF GRADE SEVEN STUDENTS
Tobing, Paulina Gloria
Widya Mandala Catholic University Surabaya
Vocabulary is one of the most important aspects of language developments. Unfortunately, not all students have a good skill of memorizing vocabularies given by the teacher. Apparently, the students receive limited number of vocabulary items. They need a technique to help them easier in learning new vocabulary and keep it for long term memory. This paper discusses the effect of Total Physical Response in teacher’s storytelling on vocabulary mastery at seventh grade students in a private school in Surabaya. It was a quasi-experimental study. The writer used two groups, pretestposttest design. The experimental group was taught by using Total Physical Response-Story while the control group was taught by using translation.
The research instrument used in this study is vocabulary test that consisted of 60 multiple-choice items that the students had to finish in 120 minutes. The stories were taken from 30 Teenage Stories by Children's Book Trust, New Delhi, and the participants will be grade seven of junior high school students in a state school in Surabaya.
The result reveals that there is a different score between students who are taught by Total Physical Response and those who are taught by translation.

Imagery in the Journals Written by the Writing I Students Of the English Department Of Widya Mandala Catholic University Surabaya
Trisnawaty, Nonce
Many students think that writing is a daunting task and,
therefore, they cannot write a good composition and journal writing is
assigned for writing improvement. One of the aspects in writing a journal
is imagery. Imagery is the use of concrete words to replace the abstract
ones in order to enable the readers to imagine in everything experienced
by the author. This study explored the kinds of imagery which are found
in the journals written by the Writing I students of Widya Mandala
Catholic University Surabaya. The subjects were eleven students of
Writing I. Each student submitted 4 journals. A checklist was used to
organize the imagery in the journals. Not all writing journals that were
analyzed exposed imagery. Visual and auditory imagery were found.
There were forty seven examples of visual imagery and six examples of
auditory imagery. The olfactory, gustatory and tactile imagery were not
found

Reading Test Construction
Budiyono, B.
Wibowo, B. Himawan Setyo
The importance of reading skills accounts for a number of credits to reading courses. It also accounts for a variety of formats of assessment such as weekly assessment and end-of-term tests. For that reason, Barrett’s taxonomy proposes itself to be a reference for reading test construction. It suggests operational skills to be tested.

Harjanto, Ignatius
Widya Mandala Catholic University Surabaya
The study was intended to describe the coherence strategies and devices used by the graduate students of Widya Mandala Catholic University Surabaya in writing Introduction section to achieve coherence. This discourse analysis study described the internal relationship of form and meaning by applying textual analysis with a multimodal analysis. The researcher found non-deductive and neither deductive nor non-deductive strategy in this study. The non-deductive strategy consisted of three elements: context establishment, further focus, and thesis statement. The neither deductive nor non-deductive strategy did not have any complete elements, so those writings were categorized as incoherent introductions. Beside those strategies, there were 6 coherence devices identified; they were repetition of key nouns, the definite article ‘the’, parallelism, purpose signals, substitution, and transitional signals.

Literary Texts as the Material In Teaching Reading Comprehension
Budiono, Davy
In selecting the appropriate literary texts to be used as the
material in teaching reading comprehension, we have to consider a
number of criteria. The criteria for valid literary texts to be used in
teaching reading comprehension are the types of the literary texts, the
students’ proficiency level, and the themes that will suit the students’
interest. Still, the teacher’s creativity in developing the material is still
needed to support the achievement of the teaching-learning goals. This
paper is intended for selecting the suitable literary material for teaching
reading comprehension for the third year of SMU students. This paper
begins with the discussion of the purposes of using literary texts in
teaching reading comprehension. It is followed by the nature of literary
texts and the nature of reading comprehension. Later in this paper the
criteria of texts selection will also be discussed

The Effects of Jigsaw and GTM on the Reading Comprehension Achievement of the Second Grade of Senior High School Students
Rossiana, Yullia
The aim of this study is to compare the effectiveness of Jigsaw
and GTM on second grade of senior high school students’ reading
achievement. The subjects of the study used are two classes of the second
grade of St. Agnes Senior High School. A quasi-experimental research
with a pretest-posttest non-equivalent control group design was used to
do this research. In order to know the effects of those two techniques, the
writer used the pretest posttest as the instrument with 16 multiple choice
items. To calculate the data, t-test for significance of difference between
two means for independent samples was used. After analyzing the data
which had been collected, the writer found out that the mean of the gain
scores of the experimental group was 1.68 and the control group was
0.81. The mean of the gain scores between the two groups were not
significantly different. It means the students who were taught using
Jigsaw technique did not have a better reading achievement than those
who were taught using GTM.

The Effects of Vocabulary Mastery on Comprehending Maritime English Texts: A Case Study of Seafarers of Nautical Class
Erawati, Ika
Politeknik Pelayaran Surabaya
vocabulary mastery, reading strategy, maritime English texts, seafarers, case study.
To comprehend the larger units of text such paragraphs and
stories, the seafarers have to understand first Maritime English (ME)
vocabulary. The types of ME vocabulary can be divided into core
vocabulary type, semi-technical vocabulary type, and maritime and/or
technical vocabulary type. This case study involves eight (8) seafarers of
nautical class at Merchant Marine Academy who were investigated in
around six sessions of meeting. Maritime Vocabulary Mastery Test,
classroom observation, questionnaire, interview and reading
comprehension texts were the techniques to gather data to answer the
research questions. The result found that the seafarers who had mastered
the three vocabulary types indicated that they could perform better in
comprehending ME texts than those who only mastered semi-technical
and core vocabulary type. While, those who had only mastered core
vocabulary type and those who had not mastered the three vocabulary
type encountered more difficulties in comprehending ME texts because
understanding ME texts requires both specific and general meaning of
words. The more seafarers have mastery on the three types of maritime
vocabulary, the less they encounter difficulties in comprehending ME
texts.

REVISITING THE CONCEPT OF GURU IN VARIOUS CULTURAL PERSPECTIVES
Susanto, Andrias Tri
Widya Mandala Catholic University Surabaya
Teacher education institutions worldwide have mostly attempted to shape their candidate teachers with positive traits of an effective teacher. However, this notion of equipping the future teachers with features of an ideal figure of a teacher seems to be obscure without any comprehensible identifications of what the features are. This study was then written to report an analytical review on the conception of a great teacher under the noble idea of guru as understood in Javanese and Indian culture. By understanding the various cultural perspectives of the term ‘an ideal teacher’ and identifying the characteristics of guru¸ this article can later be used as a foundation of defining what type of a teacher that a teacher education institution has been working on. This was conducted through literature review and analytical qualitative study of some candidate teachers taking Micro Teaching course in the Faculty of Teacher Training in Widya Mandala Catholic University Surabaya. This study attempted to identify connections between the proposed theories discussed and personal perspectives of the candidate teachers conveyed through their reflective writing products.

Verification of the Linear Momentum Conservation Law Using Linear Air Track
Hasian Sinaga, Putu Chrisnaria
The progress of physics is based on facts and experimental data.
Therefore, it is very important to prove or verify some theories
experimentally. One of fundamental laws of physics is momentum
conservation law. It has been used extensively in many mechanical
problems involving collisions. However, the use of this law is usually
taken for granted and rarely been demonstrated experimentally due to
technical difficulties in determining the instantaneous velocities of the
objects before and after the collision takes place. These difficulties can be
solved by using Linear Air Track to prove the conservation law of
momentum by colliding two vehicles on the track, because Linear Air
Track can provide linear and stable motion with negligible friction force
between vehicles and its track. By using photographic technique, the
image can be quantified and analyzed to obtain the instantaneous
velocities the object before and after collision. As a temporary hypothesis
Linear Air Track can be use to verify the linear momentum conservation
law on any collision between two objects. Due to considerably high
degree of measurement uncertainties involved in the experiment, the
hypothesis will be accepted if the comparative ration between the final
and initial total momentum of the system is up or equal to 90%. The result
from this experiment shows that the percentages of accuracy are up to
90%. Then, we may conclude that Linear Air Track can be used to verify
the linear momentum conservation law on any collision between two
objects.

The Effect of Structured Jigsaw Technique and Unstructured Group Work on The Listening Achievement of Junior High School Students
Santoso, Agustin
Nowadays, English has been used as the most important foreign
language in Indonesia. Many schools have used it as their important
subject to be taught to the students. The English teaching can cover 4
language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing, all of them are
important, especially listening. Listening is not an easy subject to master.
It needs the teacher’s role in teaching that skill. In this study, the writer
would like to know whether there is a significant difference between the
listening achievement of learners taught by using structured jigsaw
technique and unstructured group work technique, especially in
answering the three types of questions.
The writer took the data from St. Clara Junior High School and the
population is the second grade students. The writer took VIIIB as the
control group and VIIIC as the experimental group. The writer
administered pretest before the treatment to see the level of the students’
listening ability. After that, she conducted three times treatment by using
structured jigsaw technique in the experimental group and unstructured
group work in the control group. The posttest was administered and then
the writer analyzed the mean scores by using t-test.
From the analysis of the pretest, the writer found out that those two
groups had equal ability in listening achievement. From the posttest
scores, the writer also found out that those two groups were not
significantly different. It means that the null hypothesis which says
“There is no significant difference in listening achievement between the
second grade Junior High School students who are taught using jigsaw
technique and those who are taught using unstructured group work” was
accepted. Further analysis found that jigsaw technique could improve the
students’ listening ability in answering main idea questions.

narrative literary text, content, context, theme, taxonomy
Teacher’s creativity is needed in developing the teaching
materials for reading comprehension. This assumption is concluded
based on a study that revealed that most students and teacher candidates
of English are having serious in both constructing and providing answers
to inferential and analytical questions. This article discusses the selection
and the exploitation of suitable narrative literary materials for teaching
reading comprehension. This paper begins with the discussion of the
advantages of using narrative literary texts in teaching reading
comprehension. It is followed by a short description on how literary texts
can be exploited by constructing closed and open questions based on
Barrett’s taxonomy of reading comprehension levels. However, as
teachers of English it is essential that the communicative aspects of
language learning should be kept in focus as individual answers may
arise.

Teacher-Student Classroom Verbal Interaction in Intensive Course Classes of an English Department Student
., Vincentia S.H.S
Taloko, Johanes Leonardi
classroom verbal interaction, patterns, forms
An English education should be delivered using English to form
an English atmosphere. In teaching-learning activity, so many
interactions happen in the classroom, for example teacher-students,
students-students, etc. Since Intensive Course becomes the foundation of
the English Department students, how the interaction should be
conducted, especially the verbal interaction should get a high attention.
Realizing that classroom verbal interaction is important, the writers
decided to do a study in it. In line with the introduction, the research
questions raised in this study are: What forms of classroom verbal
interactions were found in IC classes? Which form of classroom verbal
interactions was most commonly used in IC classes? This research was a
classroom ethnographic research applying a nonparticipant observation.
The data of this study are gained by doing observations. Sitting at the
back of the classroom observing the learning-teaching activities,
recording the teachers’ and students’ talk secretly, and noting down and
analyzing the classroom interaction were done to observe the classroom.
Using the theory by Ur (1991), the writers found two forms of classroom
interaction in Intensive Course; those were teacher active, students
mainly receptive and student active, teacher mainly receptive. The most
commonly used form was teacher active, students mainly receptive

This study aimed to investigate students’ perception on their writing anxiety and how they employed their writing self-efficacy as well as the relationship between writing anxiety and writing efficacy. This research was conducted toward 29 students from undergraduate and graduate EFL students in Yogyakarta who were taking critical writing course. This study used mixed-method research employing a close-ended questionnaire and interview to gather the data. The writing anxiety questionnaire statements were adopted from Cheng (2004), while the writing efficacy statements were adopted from Eby (2018). The data results were analysed using SPSS version 25 then described statistically, whilst the interview data were analysed using thematic analysis. The results showed that both undergraduate and graduate students have a high self-efficacy and anxiety in writing. A correlation test was conducted and described in the discussion section to see the relationship between writing anxiety and writing efficacy indicates that all aspects of writing anxiety had a negative correlation but not significant with writing ability and behavior. However, not all aspects of writing anxiety such as somatic anxiety, avoidance behaviour, and cognitive anxiety had a negative correlation with writing ideas, writing conventions and self-regulation in writing. The interview result showed that the students who had good self-efficacy in writing felt anxiety as a means to explore themselves and foster a positive mindset to continue progressing in writing. The implication of this research is to expand knowledge related to writing practice in EFL context and educational psychology.

Language learning strategies guide language learners to become active learners that can provide their own needs and choose their preference in learning the language. Therefore, this study was done to study the language learning strategies used by high and low achieving students in learning speaking as well as how they apply their strategies. There were 20 participants taking part in this study. They were classified into high and low achievers based on the students speaking score of their speaking performances. SILL questionnaire proposed by Oxford (1990) was adapted in this study to better fit the purpose of this study. The validity and reliability of the questionnaire was also done to measure what it was intended to measure. Besides questionnaire, a semi-structured interview was also used as the instrument to complement the quantitative data. Based on the data gathered through questionnaire, the study revealed that metacognitive strategy as the most frequently used strategy by high and low achieving students. Additionally, the data gathered through interviews also showed that each group of achievers applied all language learning strategies as proposed by Oxford (1990); memory strategy, cognitive strategy, compensation strategy, metacognitive strategy, affective strategy, and social strategy. However, high achiever learners were reported using a higher number (13 strategies) of language learning strategies than low achiever learners (11 strategies). The study confirms that learners who have a higher level of English competence will almost certainly apply wider strategies in their language learning.

This research reports a study on students’ attitudes towards an online learning platform, Quizlet, in English vocabulary learning. Three research questions were raised, namely: 1) How are the students’ attitudes towards Quizlet in English vocabulary learning? 2) What influence do the students’ attitudes have on their English vocabulary learning using Quizlet? 3) How does Quizlet facilitate the students’ English vocabulary learning? This qualitative study used a questionnaire and an interview to investigate students’ attitudes towards Quizlet in their English vocabulary learning. Twenty students were involved in the questionnaire and six students in the interview. Three major findings are concerned with the students’ attitudes toward Quizlet; the influence of the students’ attitudes towards their English vocabulary learning using Quizlet; and how Quizlet facilitates their English vocabulary learning. Findings indicate that 1) students’ attitudes were all positive, deriving from their opinions, thoughts, feelings, and experiences towards Quizlet; 2) the positive attitudes gave encouragement to their English vocabulary learning; and 3) Quizlet facilitated the students’ English vocabulary learning through its features, namely; Card, Study, Game, and Test modes. Based on these findings, some suggestions are offered. First, for the students to pay more attention to the learning platform they use to learn, such as Quizlet. Second, for the teacher, lecturer, and Study Program Department to pay more attention to the students’ positive attitudes towards a particular learning platform and to utilize more Quizlet for learning. Third, future researchers should investigate how far Quizlet facilitates English vocabulary learning via pretest and posttest.

Pembuatan Modul Eksperimen Sains Bilingual untuk Siswa Sekolah Dasar Pokok Bahasan Udara, Listrik, Energi dan Perubahannya
., Herwinarso
Palupi, M.G. Retno

Wijaya, Kristian Florensio
Cita Hati Christian School
Array
It is principal to understand that EFL educators’ professional journeys are affected by varied internal and external factors such as school policies, particular curriculums, and educational cultures. From this stance, reflective teaching practice can act as one of the promising solutions to transfigure EFL educators into more well-rounded and thoughtful learning facilitators, which in turn is helpful to improve their entire teaching qualities. The researcher initiated this current small-scale qualitative library study to exhaustively investigate the influential impacts of transmitting reflective teaching practice into Indonesian EFL educators’ professional journeys. To fully attain this main study objective, the researcher employed a thematic analysis in reviewing the specifically-obtained research results derived from 25 reflective teaching studies. Based on the thematic analysis, it was deduced that through the constant internalization of reflective teaching practice, EFL educators can gradually transform into more professional language learning facilitators who are capable of promoting better-facilitated English learning enterprises.

The Industrial Revolution 4.0 (IR 4.0) signifying manufacturing digitalization has become a major concern around the globe. Not only does it deal with industrialists or engineers, but it also deals with teachers, and education policy makers. This new revolution requires educational institutions to prepare their students to be able to adapt themselves in this new era. English, serving as a global lingua franca, still plays an important role for all students in different majors that need to be mastered. One of the English language skills, reading, must be given sufficient attention by English teachers for their students to be able to read and comprehend English texts in their job fields in the future. This study attempts to reveal the reading comprehension mastery of the Business Administration students in a private university. It examines three series of English proficiency test (EPT) exercises and a final EPT they took as the requirements to complete their study in the university. Among the thirteen micro skills in this kind of test, the students’ most problematic skills are: answering transition questions correctly (25% correctly answered), determining the tone, purpose, or course (37%), and using context to determine meaning of difficult words (42%). Possible causes and recommendations to minimize those problems are also comprehensively presented.

Considerations in developing and using CAT to assess students' proficiency in English as a foreign language in Indonesia
Harjanto, Ignatius
Budiono, Davy
The English curriculum for Secondary Schools in Indonesia
requires the students to acquire ability in accomplishing tasks adequately,
to find solutions, and to realize them in real situations. Such objectives
can be achieved if, among others, teachers are qualified. This means that
the graduates of teacher training colleges (TTCs) must be competent in
the field having knowledge and skills. In case of English education, they
must be proficient in the four English skills. To ensure their English
proficiency, a test administered institutionally, which varies from one
college to another, is not enough. A national test on English proficiency
to the graduating students of TTCs is needed so that a national standard
of proficiency for teachers can be measured. However, administering a
national English proficiency test is expensive and cumbersome as well. A
solution to the problem is the application of computer adaptive tests
(CAT). This article argues that CAT enables the students to measure their
own level of English proficiency inexpensively. Ideas on the rationale,
application, and impacts of standardized proficiency test using CAT on
students with learning English difficulties in regular schools are shared.

Teacher’s Enforcing Positive Interdependence: Students’ Perceptions
Tamah, Siti Mina
As there is a tendency to regard that a classroom without the label of ‘cooperative learning’ is not a good one, recent instructional practices then often utilize group work to encourage students to gain knowledge from one another – to assist and to seek assistance from their peers in addition to from the classroom teacher. Classrooms have the typical characteristics of small groups. The lock-step mode of instruction has been implicitly discouraged.
Group seating in classrooms requires a teacher to keep into consideration the essential components of cooperative learning. One of the two critical components most widely reviewed is Positive Interdependence. With the trend to incorporate cooperative learning in the classroom practices, this Positive Interdependence is undoubtedly to be imposed to obtain the beneficial outcomes of cooperative efforts. Simply put, how can a teacher actively engage their students in their group work? How can a teacher enforce Positive Interdependence when implementing group work? This paper provides a model of enforcing students who are accustomed to having a non-cooperative learning class. It is in fact an attempt of the writer to share her classroom practice – what she has done to make the students really work as a group. To be more particular, this paper is intended to reveal students’ perceptions on the writer’s attempt to enforce the cooperative learning component – Positive Interdependence.

(Bahasa) Iklan: Memahami dan Memanfaatkannya sebagai Materi Pelajaran Bahasa
Harjanto, Ignatius
In modern life, people cannot avoid persuasion from
advertisements. Advertisers employ techniques to make claims for their
products. The advertisers promise and claim in such a way that
consumers may buy the products even when they do not really need them.
People may disagree with and question the promises and claims of
advertisements. The fact is that more consumers including students
believe promises and claims in the advertisements than those who
question them. Consumers who question the promises and claims of
advertisements argue that advertising is childish, dumb, and a bunch of
lies. This article discusses the language of advertising and how
advertisers persuade and argue. To clarify the discusion, examples of
claims used in the advertisements are given. The paper is ended with
discussion of using advertisements for language teaching materials

PGRI Adi Buana University Surabaya
In EFL teaching and learning, writing is one of important language skills which help students show their ideas, thought, and attitudes. Nevertheless, the phenomenon nowadays shows that EFL students cannot express their clear, correct, comprehensible, and creative ideas because of the lack of creative thinking skills they possessed. This
research aimed at showing the implementation of deconstructed moviebased writing to foster students’ creative thinking skill and describing the students’ creative thinking skill reflected when they were taught deconstructed movie-based writing. This research used descriptive qualitative design. The data were collected from classroom observation, field note, documentation of the process of teaching creative writing using deconstructed movie-based writing and the students’ writing performance to know their creative thinking. The data were analyzed descriptively. The result revealed that the use of deconstructed movie-based writing to foster students’ creative thinking works well. There were three criteria of creative thinking skill which are improved from the first meeting to the last meeting;
they are image, characterization, and voice. However, the story criterion was decreased on the second meeting compared with the first meeting and improved on the third meeting. The students’ creative thinking skill was improved after they were taught deconstructed movie-based writing.

Parents’ and Teachers’ Perceptions of the Assessment of the Students’ English Achievement
Ngadiman, Agustinus
Widiati, Agnes Santi
Widiyanto, Yohanes Nugroho
The need for the teaching of English as a foreign language in
Indonesia has been felt by almost all levels of society, especially in big
cities. Without realizing the schools readiness, society has put a great
expectation on the success of the English teaching. In fact, the success of
the English teaching is also influenced by the parents’ involvement in the
school program. Parents’ involvement will be beneficial when parents
and teachers have the same perception about instructional programs,
including the assessment of the students’ achievement. The study proves
that parents and teachers have similar perceptions of some aspects of the
English achievement assessment but different perceptions of other aspects
of the assessment. In some respects, such as the function of test, the types
of tests used to assess students’ English achievement, parents and English
teachers are of the same perception. In other respects, however, such as
the level of difficulty, the validity of the test, and the materials covered in
the test, they are of different perception. This mismatch of perception may
cause problems for the teachers, parents, and students.

Inner Circle English Cultural Senses Found in Interlanguage XII

cultural senses, inner-circle English culture, course book evaluation, content analysis.
The learning of culture is unavoidable in the learning of English
since cultural values are embedded in the body of language. In order to
communicate effectively, language learners need to be culturally aware of
what their utterances might convey. As one of important factors in
successful language learning process, English course books should foster
English cultural issues and support learners to be culturally competence.
The study investigated cultural contents of the inner-circle English
countries in an English course book entitled Interlanguage XII, which has
been approved by Badan Standar Nasional Pendidikan (BSNP). The
inner-circle English cultural contents were investigated through the
theory of four senses of culture by Adaskou et al (1990). The all four
senses of culture were included in Interlanguage XII. The results
indicated that the highest percentage is the presence of pragmatic sense,
while the least sense was the sociological sense. The results also showed
that even though the all four sense were present, the frequency among
those four was not balance. This implies the aim and the emphasis of the
course book in the foreign language learning; the course book emphasize
more on the use of language instead of its grammatical and structural
skill.

ERRORS IN LONG VOWEL PRONUNCIATION: A CASE OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT STUDENTS
Gusdian, Rosalin Ismayoeng
Muhammadiyah University Malang
The study aims to investigate the errors in the long vowel realizations committed by students of English Language Education Department. It is a case study of the English Language Education Department students of Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang. The study employed qualitative method. The data were the recorded pronunciation of twenty students from the Speaking for Informal Interaction class at Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang. The data were collected when the students performed a storytelling for three to five minutes. In the data analysis, all of the recordings were carefully listened and the mispronunciation of words containing the targeted long vowels was identified. Upon the long vowel error identification, the students’ long vowel production was phonologically transcribed and assigned into the table of long vowels. The table was set according to the classification of the five types of English long vowels, namely [ɑ:], [ɛ:], [i:], [ɔ:], [u:]. Further, the phonological transcription analysis referred to
Received Pronunciation (RP) and General American (GA) as the accepted pronunciation standards. The result shows that the English long vowels [i:], [ɑ:], [ɛ:], [u:], and [ɔ:] are replaced with the short vowels [ʌ], [i], [ɛ], [u], and [ɔ] respectively. The replacement is implemented due to the absence of the targeted sounds in the students native language (Bahasa). This phenomenon is the result of phonological transfer.

READINESS AND INVOLVEMENT OF EARLY CHILDHOOD TEACHERS IN EAST JAVA DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC THROUGH ONLINE LEARNING
Anggraini, Kristin
Widya Mandala Catholic University Surabaya
Array
Since the beginning of 2020, the world has been shaken by an incident, namely the spread of the Covid-19 virus. The spread of the Covid-19 virus is very widespread throughout the world, so the World Health Organization (WHO) conveyed this as a threat to the world on January 31, 2020 which was later announced to be a pandemic for the international community, namely on March 11, 2020 (Shan L. Pana et al, 2020). The Indonesian government finally took part in handling the spread of the Covid-19 virus, including by recording the area where the virus spread and mapping it into several zones (Kemenkes, 2020). Because of some areas in East Java are mostly in the red and orange zones, which are areas with a high and dangerous spread of the Covid-19 virus, the researchers wanted to know the readiness and involvement of early childhood teachers in East Java during the COVID-19 pandemic through online learning. This research is a qualitative descriptive study that uses data collection techniques through literature review and surveys. Furthermore, all data collected from both the literature review and survey results were analyzed for description. The survey results state that the activities that have been planned in the lesson plan can be carried out well. However, there are parents of students who often do not collect student assignments on time, resulting in teachers having difficulty in assessing each student. Good ICT mastery can facilitate the implementation of online learning activities and early childhood teachers also support the implementation of online learning from home imposed by the Government to suppress the spread of the Covid-19 virus.

GRAMMATICAL ERRORS IN THE TENTH GRADE STUDENTS’ NARRATIVE WRITING
Noor Aini, Theresia Indah
St. Louis I Catholic High School Surabaya
The present study examined the students’ grammatical errors and source of errors in their narrative essays. This was a descriptive qualitative research method with a case study design. 84 tenth-grade students of SMA X Surabaya in the 2012-2013 school year participated in this study. The source of data of this research included 84 copies of the students’ narrative essays written in English. The data were the grammatically incorrect sentences. The instrument used for data collection of this study was a narrative writing assignment. The collected data were then analyzed to discover the error types, their frequency of occurrence, and then their sources. The results showed that the grammatical errors which the students made in their personal narrative essays included errors in (a) verb form or tense, (b) shift in tense, (c) plurality of nouns, (d) articles, (e) adjectives or adverbs, (f) prepositions, (g) sentence construction, (h) subject-verb agreement (i) possessive pronoun and contraction, (j) sentence coordination, (k) fused sentence, and (l) pronoun reference. The sources of the above-mentioned grammatical errors included (a) interference from the students’ native language, (b) intra-lingual and developmental factors, (c) communication strategies, and (d) context of learning. The errors caused by interference from the students’ L1 included errors in phonology/orthography, morphology, grammar, lexico-semantic and style. The errors were also attributed by inter-lingual or developmental factors, such as overgeneralization, ignorance of rule restrictions, false analogy, hyperextension, hypercorrection, and faulty categorization. The communication strategies causing the errors included paraphrasing, substitution, words coinage, and language switch. The last source was context of learning which was caused by the teacher, teaching materials, or the order of presentation. The errors show that actually the students still have problems on grammar. Therefore, the students should learn more and the teachers should develop more material and teaching technique. And the teachers should also stress the comparison between Bahasa Indonesia as their first language and English as their second language.

PRAGMATIC FEATURES IN THE SPEAKING SECTIONS OF BAHASA INGGRIS UNTUK SMA/MA KELAS XI SEMESTER 1
Indah, Dewi Rosaria
One of the 21st century challenges is effective oral communication. While at the same time, some senior high school students are considered to be inept to speak English fluently. Their shortcomings in speaking belong to area of pragmatics. This study was intended to evaluate an English course book for senior high school entitled Bahasa Inggris untuk SMA/MA Kelas XI Semester 1 that is widely used by most senior high schools in Surabaya. Based on those rationales, this study investigated Bahasa Inggris untuk SMA/MA Kelas XI Semester 1 to find out what language function is taught and how the language function is delivered as reflected by the four pragmatic features in the speaking sections in the course book under study.
The result of the study found first that there were all 8 language functions that were under transactional and interpersonal functions as demanded by the Curriculum 2006 but they were not presented in sequence as what the Curriculum 2006 demanded. Second, that all the four pragmatic features: context, the cooperative principles, and speech acts and politeness were found in the speaking sections and yet two characteristics in Speech Acts were not found. 5 items in Speech Acts and Politeness were not found as well. The arrangement of the four pragmatic features were provided moderately and mostly implied while they should be provided explicitly.
Key Words: pragmatic features, language function, speaking sections, context, the cooperative principles, speech acts, politeness, senior high school English course book.

teaching strategies, reading comprehension
This study was intended to know the teaching strategies that
were used by English teachers in teaching reading and the students’
responses on those strategies at two Senior High Schools in Surabaya. It
was a classroom observational research. The subjects of this study were
English teachers and students of two private high schools in Surabaya.
Their classroom activities were recorded by using a handy camera and a
tape recorder and she also took some pictures by using a camera. Then,
the teachers were interviewed to give comments about actions taken in
classroom. The interviews were carried out after the observation. From
the observations and interviews, the writer found out that the teachers
have already used the appropriate strategies of teaching reading as
suggested by the 2006 curriculum. For example: the teachers applied
BKoF (Building Knowledge of Field) in pre-reading activities, MoT
(Modeling of Text) in whilst-reading activities, JCoT (Joint Construction
of Text) and ICoT (Independence Construction of Text) in post-reading
activities. However, on a closer examination, the students responded
differently on the teachers’ strategies. There were positive and negative
responses from the students

Reading skill is an important skill in the mastery of a language as the more the students read, the more exposed they are to the target language. Giving reading comprehension questions that suit the students’ thinking level has been widely known to foster the students’ critical thinking and reading comprehension. This study aimed (1) to explore the cognitive level of the reading comprehension questions found in EFL textbook based on the Revised Bloom’s Taxonomy and (2) to explore appropriate reading comprehension questions to supplement the EFL textbook to meet the Curriculum of 2013. This study analyzed an EFL textbook for year X of high school based on the cognitive domain of the Revised Bloom’s Taxonomy. The findings show that the proportion between LOTS and HOTS questions was 85.5% and 15.5%. Considering that the EFL textbook was dominated by LOTS questions, it was concluded that the EFL textbook was not appropriate for 10th grade students. Therefore, this study proposed 84 appropriate reading comprehension questions to supplement the EFL textbook so as to allow the students to hone their reading skill through various cognitive processes. There was an increase of 20.4% in the percentage of HOTS questions after the addition of the researcher’s supplementary questions, so the proportion between LOTS and HOTS questions became 65.1% (LOTS questions) and 34.9% (HOTS questions).

THE READING STRATEGIES AND READING COMPREHENSION OF THE HEALTH ANALYST DEPARTMENT STUDENTS
Istanto, Wisnu
Politeknik Kesehatan Kementrian Kesehatan Surabaya
This research focused on the issue of the reading strategies and reading comprehension of the Health Analyst Department students. The Health Analyst Department students need reading strategies to acquire knowledge according to their specific needs. They need to be able to comprehend their target texts. This research aimed to identify the Health Analyst Department students’ reading strategies and reading comprehension achievement as well as to correlate their reading strategies to reading comprehension. This research employed qualitative method. The research utilized Mokhtari and Sheorey’ (2002) survey of reading strategies (SORS) and reading comprehension test (RCT) as research instruments. All research data of reading strategies (global, problem solving and support reading strategies) and reading comprehension were analyzed by using descriptive statistics, linear regression and Pearson’s Product Moment correlation test. The students frequently utilized the problem solving reading strategies in comprehending their target texts. The correlation coefficient of support reading strategies is greater than the two others. Those results give indications that the students’ choices of reading strategies do not always give better reading comprehension. The students’ reading strategies have significant positive correlation to their reading comprehension with regard to their comprehending the target texts.

Some Cars in Indonesia Have ‘Names’: A Linguistically Creative Use of Rebus
Prijambodo, V. Luluk
The practice of name giving differs from language to language. A
name can be given to a person, place or thing. Therefore, there are
person names, place names, thing names. The fact, however, a person
may be named after a place or even an animal name. The phenomenon
discussed in this article shows another practice of name giving not to a
person, place or thing, but to a car. That is a car is named after its owner.
It is the implication beyond the name giving that this article intends to
uncover.

Since pandemic novel outbreak, almost all educational institutes have transitioned to online learning in order to keep the teaching and learning process going. In Indonesia, the practice of online learning is still relatively, unclearly understood due to the minimum awareness of the ICT (Information and Communication Technology). Some studies revealed that online learning gave positive as well as negative impacts to the students’ learning motivation. Especially, the negative impacts may cause difficulties, stress, and anxiety in learning. Therefore, this present study was intended to reveal the factors affecting motivation and demotivation for students in learning English online, more specifically, during COVID-19 pandemic and to find out which factors were the most motivating and the most demotivating. A survey design was employed in this study. Thirty-six students of an English education study program at a private university were involved. The data were collected using questionnaire and analysed using statistic descriptive technique. The findings revealed that students’ motivation and demotivation could have been influenced by intrinsic and extrinsic factors. In particular, there were 5 motivating factors affecting students’ motivation, namely: students’ intrinsic learning motivation, self-efficacy, teachers’ performances & attitudes, contents & materials, and classmates’ attitudes. Among 5 motivating factors, teachers’ performances & attitudes turned out to be the most motivating factors, followed by contents & materials, and students’ intrinsic learning motivation. Concerning the demotivating factors, only one factor, i.e., technical factor was found to be the only one and most demotivating factor. This study contributes to the learning of English during online as well as offline schools

THE EFFECT OF MIND MAPPING TECHNIQUES ON THE VOCABULARY MASTERY OF SECOND GRADE STUDENTS OF ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Kusuma, Elizabeth
Widya Mandala Catholic University
In this study, the writer used a quasi-experimental non-equivalent-groups pre-test-post-test design. The subjects of this study were the second grade students of Elementary School. The writer used two classes as the sample of this experiment. The experimental group was taught using mind mapping and another was taught using word list. Before that, the writer gave a pre-test, and after the experiment a post-test to both groups. From the calculation of the t-test, the writer found the t-observation of both groups. From the analysis of the pre-test, the writer found out that those two groups had equal ability in vocabulary mastery. From the post-test scores, the writer also found out that those two groups were not significantly different. The t-observation of the two groups was 1.26, while the t-table was 2.08. It means that the null hypothesis which says “there is no significant difference between the vocabulary mastery of the second grade students who were taught by using mind mapping technique and one of those taught by using word list technique” was accepted.

Kebergantungan Nilai Indeks Bias Medium Pada Panjang Gelombang Model Sellmeier
., Herwinarso
diperoleh persamaan dispersi indeks bias Cauchy.

This paper reports a study that analyzed the content of two English textbooks used in junior high school in Indonesia. The two textbooks are officially published by Indonesia's Ministry of Culture and Education. The first is "When English Rings a Bell," written by Siti Wachidah, Asep Gunawan, Diyantari, and Yuli Rulani Khatimah and published in 2017, and the second is "Modul Pembelajaran Jarak Jauh pada Masa Pandemi Covid-19 untuk jenjang SMP Mata Pelajaran Bahasa Inggris untuk semester genap kelas VIII” which is published in 2020. The findings revealed similarities and differences between the two textbooks. Two English textbooks differ greatly because they have different goals. The second book is not a revision of the first, but it appears to be the solution to the pandemic. The first textbook is designed to improve language skills through the use of communicative approach, both spoken and written, with English as the medium of communication. However, the second textbook is expected to be beneficial and meaningful for students to achieve the intended competence independently. Despite differences in goal or focus in developing the textbooks, they share similarities in terms of basic competence that students must achieve.

Writing accelerates students' use of the target language, making it an essential part of classroom preparation. Writing skills can be improved through the use of mind mapping. The following are the research's goals:1) to determine whether teaching writing to eighth-graders using mind mapping or peer review is more effective, 2) to determine whether eighth-graders with higher levels of creativity have better writing skills than those with lower levels of creativity, and 3) to determine whether teaching methods and students' creativity interact when teaching writing to eighth-graders. An experimental study with a 2x2 factorial design is this one. This study uses 48 students as samples. In this study, writing and creativity tests are used to collect data. ANOVA and the Tukey test are used to analyze the data. The data analysis revealed that the mind mapping method is more effective than the peer review method for teaching eighth-grade writing. In the eighth grade, students with high creativity have better writing skills than students with low creativity. There is an interaction between teaching techniques and students' creativity in teaching writing in the eighth grade.

The Teacher’s Roles in Teaching English for Specific Purposes to Nursing Program Students
Arifah, Nurul
Prijambodo, V. Luluk
The consideration of mastering English nowadays brings advanced concept in order to reach better education and career in globalization era and the mindset changes of English language education, particularly in nursing as a familiar job within public health. Related to that phenomenon, English for Specific Purposes (ESP) teacher should also notice that in teaching ESP they have to play their roles to help students in the teaching and learning process. Considering the importance of the teacher’s roles in teaching ESP, this study aimed at finding out the teacher’s roles in the teaching and learning process of ESP to nursing program students. Besides, this study also aimed at finding out the students responses towards the roles in the teaching and learning process of ESP to nursing program students. This qualitative case study focuses primarily on understanding in depth the teacher’s roles in the teaching and learning process of ESP to nursing program students. The data to cope with ‘the roles played by the teacher in the teaching of ESP’ were both verbal and nonverbal performance when the teachers were playing their roles in classroom while the data to deal with ‘the students’ response towards the teacher’s roles’ were the students’ opinion and attitude towards the teachers’ performance in the classroom. For both research questions, the data collection and analysis procedures were done using classroom observations (using audio visual recording, observation sheet, and fields note), questionnaire and interview (for both the teacher and students). This study found that the kinds of roles played by the research subjects were as the lecturer, clinical or practical teacher, role model, facilitator, mentor, assessor, curriculum assessor, resource developer, and study guide producer. This study also found that the students’ responses towards the teacher’s roles were that they liked when the teacher could do their roles well in the class. The students could also be able to understand their response towards the teacher’s roles that would have impact to their learning process, thus they became active and enthusiastic. While each of the nine of the eleven roles played has been described separately, in reality they are often interconnected and closely related one to another. The teacher’s roles in the teaching and learning process of ESP to nursing program students could be used by teachers as
